The docker beanie was regular attire for many of the port workers in the 30’s keeping their heads warm and cozy. Later on the cap reached widespread popularity and many of its variants served as a part of outfits for the US Navy. 

A similar skullcap was worn by Jean Reno in a 1994 blockbuster movie ‘Leon: The Professional’ directed by Luc Besson.
