The development of Thermohair socks started in 1990 and became available in Canada in November 1992. If you are interested in the story, it is covered “in the beginning”.
What is probably on your mind is: “why should I buy Thermohair socks?”. These are the original mohair socks made in North America and are still made the same.
Thermohair socks are made of 75/25 kid mohair/nylon yarn. Kid mohair is hair sheared from the kids, during their first year of life. It is the finest, softest, most luxurious of the mohair grades. Only 1million pounds of this grade of fibre is produced worldwide per year. It is called the diamond fibre because it is very strong and rare. It is as soft as cashmere, yet wears out the stainless steel parts in the knitting machines.
What makes kid mohair ideal for socks?
The mohair is very soft and comfy. There is minimal friction on your feet which makes them ideal for blister free trekking.
Mohair is very insulating, protecting your feet from the cold and sub-zero outdoor weather. Over the years they have been worn up every major peak, including Everest, and have been worn in both poles. They are the best socks for those working in steel toed boots or playing in the cold outdoors or for those who suffer from cold feet due to health issues. Scuba divers wear them in their suits to keep their feet warm in the icy waters.
The most durable sock you will ever wear! There is no tougher natural fibre that can take the continual foot rubbing that occurs when you walk. Some customers have worn their socks as long as 9 years, the max being 20. Of course, some folks are harder on socks than others, but the bottom line is that these socks will outwear anything you have worn.
Mohair wicks away moisture and can hold water many times its weight without your foot feeling wet.
What men mostly appreciate, is that you wear these socks at least 7 days between washes with no bad foot odour! The socks are machine washable, but hang to dry. Lonnie Dupre of Grand Marais MN wore these socks for 6 months to circumnavigate Greenland by dog sled and sea kayak in 2000. Not many laundromats on that trip!
Last but not least, the socks are made of a renewable fibre, green before green was a common word. The goats efficiently convert plants from non-agricultural lands to fibre that grows an inch a month. No other animal does such a good job! The does weigh approximately 80 lbs, yet produce 20 lbs of hair per year.
Some people asked for a finer knee high sock and a summer weight sport sock. These came into production in 2014. The knee high is thin enough to fit in a ski boot or riding boot and has added spandex to keep the sock hugging your leg. Some call it the executive sock. The sport sock is mid-calf and fits in indoor shoes or summer footwear.
Heads come in all shapes and sizes. If you can come into the shop to try them on instead of shipping, we highly recommend taking time to do so.
